Effortless Slow Cooker Applesauce

Slow Cooker Applesauce: Your Go-To Recipe for Effortless, Flavorful Fall Comfort

There’s nothing quite like the aroma of fresh apples and warm spices filling your home, especially during the crisp days of fall. And when it comes to capturing that essence in a deliciously simple way, homemade applesauce reigns supreme. Forget the store-bought jars; this Crock Pot Applesauce is bursting with natural flavor, just the right amount of sweetness, and the comforting spices that make it an absolute seasonal staple.

Autumn brings with it a bounty of apples, and in our kitchen, it often kicks off an “appleliciousness” week – a delightful tradition of creating all sorts of apple-infused treats. Special thanks to our friends at Shugary Sweets and Inside Brucrew Life, who inspire us to dive deep into apple season with their fantastic recipes. Over the years, this has led to a flurry of delicious experiments, from classic Fried Apples and a creamy Brown Sugar Cinnamon Fruit Dip to a comforting Quick Apple Crisp and even elegant Apple Pie Danish. Once you start exploring the versatility of apples, it’s hard to stop! The sheer abundance of apple goodness is truly inspiring, and there’s even a dedicated Pinterest board overflowing with applicious treats.

Amidst all these culinary adventures, one particular request kept surfacing: applesauce. My son, who is usually quite easygoing and eats whatever I put in front of him (even rice, which he genuinely dislikes!), was persistent. I had a jar of store-bought applesauce sitting on the counter, earmarked for an applesauce cake, and he desperately wanted some. But in our house, anything opened becomes a race to see who can finish it first. You should see how quickly juice disappears from the fridge; it barely has time to get cold!

So, while catching up on my favorite blogs, pinning new ideas, bookmarking recipes, and generally drooling over delicious food, I stumbled upon a brilliant idea. A visit to Crumbs and Chaos revealed Emily’s Crock Pot Applesauce recipe, featured during her own Apple Week celebration. I still had an abundance of apples on my kitchen table – probably around 30 pounds, judging by the weight when I carried them in! Remembering my poor, deprived son and that unopened jar of applesauce still mocking him from the counter, I decided it was time for a homemade surprise.

While I usually make applesauce on the stovetop, similar to how I prepare my delicious Pear Sauce, today called for a simpler approach. With other tasks on my plate, the slow cooker was the perfect solution. It offers a set-it-and-forget-it convenience that’s hard to beat, allowing the apples to slowly break down into a naturally sweet and perfectly spiced sauce with minimal effort. This method not only frees up your time but also fills your home with the most incredible aroma. It’s the ultimate hands-off way to create a wholesome, comforting treat that the whole family will adore.

The Best Crock Pot Apple Sauce Recipe

Inspired by the simple elegance of Crumbs and Chaos, this Crock Pot Apple Sauce recipe is incredibly easy to make and yields a wonderfully flavorful result. It’s truly a testament to the magic of slow cooking.

Crock Pot Apple Sauce

Delicious Crock Pot Apple Sauce

Ingredients

  • 7-8 medium sized apples (any kind, I used Granny Smith, Golden Delicious, and Red Delicious)
  • 1 cinnamon stick or 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon apple pie spice
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 2-3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Apples: Core, peel (optional, but recommended for smoother applesauce), and then cut your apples into uniform chunks, about 1 inch in size. Using a mix of apple varieties like tart Granny Smith and sweeter Golden Delicious or Red Delicious will give your applesauce a more complex and balanced flavor profile.
  2. Combine Ingredients: Place all the prepared apple chunks, cinnamon stick (or ground cinnamon), nutmeg, apple pie spice, brown sugar, and lemon juice into your slow cooker. Give everything a good stir to ensure the apples are evenly coated with the spices and sugar.
  3. Slow Cook: Cover the crock pot and set it on low heat for 6-8 hours. The longer cooking time on low heat allows the flavors to meld beautifully and the apples to become incredibly tender. Stir occasionally, if desired, especially towards the end of the cooking process. For a smoother applesauce, use a potato masher or an immersion blender directly in the pot to achieve your desired consistency. If you prefer a chunkier sauce, simply mash less. Serve warm for the best experience!
  4. Store or Preserve: Once cooled, refrigerate any remaining applesauce in an airtight container for up to a week. For longer storage, you can easily freeze it in freezer-safe bags or containers for up to 3 months, or follow proper canning procedures for shelf-stable storage.

Notes

This recipe provides a fantastic base, but feel free to adjust the spices and sweetness to your personal preference. For a less sweet applesauce, reduce the brown sugar or omit it entirely and let the natural sweetness of the apples shine through. A splash of vanilla extract at the end can also add another layer of warmth. For an even more aromatic experience, try adding a few whole cloves to the pot while it cooks.

The Magic of Slow Cooking: From Whole Apples to Velvety Smooth Applesauce

The beauty of making applesauce in the slow cooker is truly in its simplicity and the gradual transformation of humble ingredients into something spectacular. You simply dump all the ingredients in the crock pot, give it a quick toss to blend the spices and sugar, cover it, and let it work its magic. Here’s a peek at the journey:

  • After 1 hour: The apples have just begun to soften, and you’ll notice a light, fragrant juice starting to form at the bottom of the pot. The kitchen begins to fill with a subtle, inviting aroma.
  • After 4 hours: The apples are significantly softer, collapsing into themselves, and swimming in a generous amount of their own spiced liquid. They are ready for an initial mash if you prefer a smoother texture early on.
  • At 7-8 hours: This is where perfection happens! The apples are incredibly tender, easily mashed with a spoon or potato masher to your desired consistency – whether you love it silky smooth or with delightful little chunks. The flavors are fully developed, rich, and wonderfully balanced.

The result? A truly comforting and delicious homemade applesauce that brought me right back into my son’s good graces. There’s something incredibly satisfying about serving a warm, wholesome treat that was made with such ease.

  • Perfect Consistency: Mash it to your liking, from chunky to perfectly smooth.
  • Economical: Especially when apples are in season, making your own can be more cost-effective than buying pre-made.
